Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center

A Rich History

Founded in the 1950s by John and Margaret Chambliss, Reflection Riding was created to preserve the region’s natural beauty and promote environmental education. The Chambliss family carefully designed the landscape, adding trails and planting native species to protect wildlife and plant diversity.

Over time, Reflection Riding became a hub for conservation and education, with programs that connect people to nature and inspire stewardship. Today, it operates as a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the unique ecosystems of the Cumberland Plateau.

Exploring the Grounds

Trails and Scenic Drives

One of Reflection Riding’s most popular features is its network of trails and scenic drives. The trails range from easy walks to challenging hikes and pass through hardwood forests, wetlands, and meadows. The 3.4-mile Scenic Drive is a relaxing route for cars, bikes, or pedestrians, with views of Lookout Mountain and the landscape.

Botanical Wonders

Reflection Riding is home to an impressive variety of plant species, both native and exotic. The arboretum boasts over 50 species of trees and countless shrubs, flowers, and grasses. Seasonal blooms ensure that the grounds are always vibrant, with spring wildflowers, summer azaleas, and autumn foliage providing a colorful display throughout the year. They also have a super cool active iNaturalist project where they encourage visitors and staff to add their own observations from around the property!

Nature PlayScape

Opened in 2021, the Nature PlayScape spans five acres and is dedicated to fostering safe and immersive nature exploration for all visitors, especially children. Unlike traditional playgrounds, you won’t find metal and plastic here. Instead, Reflection Riding utilized the landscape’s natural features, removing hazards and adding rustic fencing to ensure safe, independent exploration.

The PlayScape encourages creativity and discovery, allowing children to engage with the environment in a way that traditional equipment cannot match. It’s designed to be whatever your child imagines it to be!

Wildlife Encounters

Wildlife enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy at Reflection Riding. The area supports diverse fauna, from deer and foxes to countless bird species. Birdwatchers can enjoy spotting everything from majestic hawks to colorful songbirds.

Animal Ambassadors

The Nature Center also houses several non-releasable animals, such as owls and snakes, offering close-up encounters and educational opportunities for visitors of all ages.  These animals are rescued and rehabilitated but cannot survive in the wild for various reasons, such as injuries or imprinting on humans.

These animal ambassadors are cared for at Reflection Riding and serve as powerful educational tools, helping visitors learn about native wildlife, their habitats, conservation challenges, and ways to protect these species. Through encounters with these ambassadors, Reflection Riding aims to foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the natural world and inspire conservation action among its visitors.
