The Wauhatchie Story

Once an old trailer park, the May family has lovingly rehabilitated this 14-acre property at the base of Lookout Mountain into a tranquil retreat, surrounded by forest. Each of our tiny cabins are named after the May’s friends and family. The property’s history dates back thousands of years as part of the Cherokee nation, who called the area Chatanuga meaning “rock rising to a point.” During the Civil War, Wauhatchie Woodlands served as part of General Grant’s “cracker line” supplying Union troops in Chattanooga. It continued to be an important part of the region’s supply chain for decades as the route of the Southern Railway. Today, Wauhatchie Woodlands offers a natural escape just minutes from beautiful Downtown Chattanooga, blending modern comfort with a unique rustic experience.

What are the check-in and check-out times? Can I check in early or check out late?

Check-in starts at 4:00 PM, and check-out is at 10:00 AM. Early check-in or late check-out isn’t guaranteed, but let our Guest Services team know what you need and we’ll see what we can do.

How do I get my door code or check-in instructions?

Once you book, keep an eye on your phone and inbox for a link to your boarding pass. After you sign the rental agreement and verify it with your ID, we’ll send your door code through there as your check-in date gets closer.

Is there a deposit or security hold required?

Guests under 21 or those living in the Greater Chattanooga area will see a refundable $200 deposit after booking. It’s returned as long as everything checks out at departure.

What’s the max occupancy?

Occupancy depends on the unit. Our tiny cabins comfortably sleep 2, while The May House can host up to 14. If you’re traveling with a bigger crew, the Pool House Group sleeps up to 28 across three connected houses.

Are pets allowed?

Yes, most units are pet-friendly and welcome up to 2 dogs under 50 pounds for a $35 pet fee. Check your specific listing first to confirm before booking.

Do the cabins have private hot tubs?

Every cabin has its own private hot tub except River and Bryce, which share a swim spa and hot tub.

Is the kitchen fully equipped?

Yes, kitchens are equipped down to the coffee maker, so you can make food at home or venture out to a nearby restaurant.

Are linens and toiletries provided?

All towels and bathroom essentials are included, along with our custom Timberroot bath products, so you can pack a little lighter.

Is there a washer/dryer?

Some cabins have their own washer and dryer. If that’s a must-have for your trip, double-check the specific listing before you book.

Is parking included?

Yes, there is parking in front of each rental. However, space is limited, so it’s best to keep to two vehicles per booking.

Is there a fire pit, and is firewood provided?

There’s a community fire pit for guests to gather around. Firewood bundles are available to add at checkout or through your booking pass after you reserve.

How far is it from downtown Chattanooga and nearby attractions?

About 10 minutes from downtown Chattanooga and Rock City, and just 5 minutes from the Incline Railway and from Ruby Falls.

Is there a store on-site?

Yes, Sprout General Store sits right at the property entrance. It’s a grab-and-go micro café stocked with coffee (from Roasted Root Cafe, Timberroot’s parent brand), ice cream, locally made goods, outdoor essentials, and Timberroot merch, and it’s open to both guests and day visitors.

What is offered on the property itself?

There’s loads to do at Wauhatchie Woodlands without ever leaving the property. Check out the pickleball court, playground, petting zoo, fire pits, and trails right on site.
