One of our favorite hikes nearby is the loop from Craven’s House to Point Park. The trail offers scenic views of Chattanooga below, and Point Park boasts 180-degree vistas that span east of the city and west over the plateaus.
Craven’s House is part of the Chattanooga National Military Park. It was a key site during a Union advance on Lookout Mountain. Just 2.6 miles from the Wauhatchie Woodlands, the house is located off Scenic Highway near Ruby Falls. Hike west toward Sunset Rock or east up the Mountain Beautiful trail. Starting west, you’ll turn up the mountain, looping back east toward Point Park.
You can reach Point Park by climbing a set of well-maintained aluminum stairs. These lead to a stunning view of the western sunset and panoramic sights of Chattanooga Valley. After enjoying the scenery, descend and return to Craven’s House via the Mountain Beautiful trail.
Keep an eye out for plaques and monuments along the way. Take short side trails to discover hidden Civil War history tucked in the woods of Lookout Mountain. The Mountain Beautiful trail, arguably the prettiest section in the Lookout Mountain Military Park network, offers stunning scenery that shouldn’t be missed.
