If you’re planning a vacation to Tennessee and looking for some fun things to do in Chattanooga, we have just the thing for you!

As you know, we’re all about helping you escape from the hustle and bustle into the great outdoors at our rustic retreats. But even when you’re surrounded by towering trees and crisp mountain air, sometimes you need a little aquatic adventure, too!

That’s why we recommend spending a day at the world-famous Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, Tennessee!

Situated along the beautiful Chattanooga Riverfront, this top-rated attraction is an absolute must-see, whether you’re a kid or just a kid at heart. And we’re here to give you all the best tips for planning a great day at the Tennessee Aquarium.

Let’s dive in!

Start Your Day with a Delicious Breakfast

Before jumping into the aquatic fun, kick off your day with a hearty breakfast.

There are several great breakfast spots near the aquarium to fuel up for the day. We recommend trying Bluegrass Grill for a traditional Southern breakfast or heading to Milk & Honey for some mouthwatering pastries and coffee.

Head to the Aquarium

Now that you’re properly fueled and ready to go, it’s time to head to the aquarium!

The Tennessee Aquarium is conveniently located at 1 Broad Street, Chattanooga, TN 37402.

There are several paid parking lots near the Aquarium and IMAX Theater, but for a hassle-free experience, consider using the city’s free shuttle, which runs daily in downtown Chattanooga.

Two Aquariums in One!

That’s right, folks – the Tennessee Aquarium is actually two massive buildings connected by a bridge over the river.  Pretty nifty, huh?

River Journey is the first of two buildings at the Tennessee Aquarium. This section showcases freshwater habitats from around the world and is home to a variety of fascinating creatures.

Some of these adorable animals include:

  • River otters playfully swimming and diving.
  • Alligators lounging in their natural habitat.
  • Giant catfish and other freshwater wonders.
  • Turtles gracefully gliding through the water.

Plan to spend about 1.5 to 2 hours exploring this section. The exhibits mimic natural environments, providing an immersive experience that’s both educational and entertaining.

Take a Break for Lunch

After your river adventure, it’s time to refuel. The Tennessee Aquarium operates a refreshment center near the River Journey Gift Shop entrance. Here, you can grab a quick snack or beverage to recharge.

Additional Food Info:

  • Beverages with a screw-top lid and canned water are allowed in the Tennessee Aquarium.
  • Free water refill stations are located throughout the aquarium.
  • The IMAX 3D Theater Concession Stand sells food and beverages, which you can bring into the IMAX Theater.
  • Coolers and outside food are not allowed in the aquarium buildings.

Continue Your Journey with Ocean Wonders

Next, head over to the Ocean Journey building, where the wonders of the sea will greet you.

Highlights of Ocean Wonder:

  • Penguins waddling and diving in their icy habitat.
  • Sharks gliding through the deep blue waters.
  • Colorful sea jellies mesmerizing with their gentle movements.
  • The touch-and-feel tank, where you can gently pet stingrays.

Be sure to check out the newly-renovated Butterfly Habitat, and don’t miss the Ring-tailed Lemurs in their adjacent exhibit.

Take in a Show at the IMAX Theater

Once you’ve explored the aquarium, it’s time to catch a show at the IMAX Theater right next door.

With a massive screen and incredible surround sound, you’ll feel like you’re swimming right alongside the marine life. From deep sea documentaries to Hollywood blockbusters, the IMAX offers an immersive viewing experience you won’t want to miss.

Timing is Everything

One of the most important things to know about the Tennessee Aquarium is that it uses a timed-entry system. That means you’ll need to buy your tickets in advance on their website for a specific date and entry time.

Ticket Pricing:

  • Aquarium + IMAX Combo: $47.95 for adults, $37.95 for youth (ages 5-17).
  • Aquarium Only: $39.95 for adults, $29.95 for youth (ages 5-17).
  • IMAX Only: $9.95 for both adults and youth.
