Discover History at Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center

Perched atop historic Lookout Mountain, the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center is a gateway to understanding one of the most significant Civil War battles: the Battle Above the Clouds. Operated by the National Park Service, this center offers visitors an enriching journey into the past with exhibits, artifacts, and breathtaking views.

The Visitor Center features an impressive collection of Civil War memorabilia, including the iconic painting “The Battle of Lookout Mountain” by James Walker. This painting vividly depicts the dramatic events of November 24, 1863, when Union forces ascended the mist-covered slopes to secure a key victory during the Chattanooga Campaign.

Guests can explore educational exhibits and pick up brochures or maps to help navigate the many hiking trails that wind through Lookout Mountain Battlefield, part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Don’t miss the Point Park Entrance, located just steps away from the Visitor Center, where you can walk along historic trenches and take in panoramic views of Chattanooga and the Tennessee River Valley.

Knowledgeable park rangers are available to provide insights into the battle’s significance and the natural beauty of the area. The Visitor Center also houses a gift shop with books, maps, and memorabilia for history buffs.
